This project, developed at Global PACT Training South Africa in 2007, addresses the increasing lack of access to water in the Grahamstown townships by harvesting rain in water tanks in neutral and key areas within the townships. For instance, the Andrew Moyake Primary School is a school of approximately 800 students. Due to increased water shortages and cut offs in the township; the school is finding it difficult to keep school open regularly due to sanitation hazards. Galela's first project will be to donate a minimum of a 5,000 litre rain water tank to assist with the desperate need for increased access to water. The Galela Amanzi Project, or "Pour the Water" has been chosen as Rhodes University student project of the year.
They were inspired to improve water access in the poorer areas of Grahamstown and assist in helping maintain healthy and sustainable communities. By raising funds for rainwater tanks in neutral areas, Galela Amanzi aims to empower previously underserviced communities by providing access to water. They collaborate with a number of local community organisations, including the Kowie Catchment Campaign, the Umthathi Training Project and the Rhodes University Centre for Social Development.
